Description
After WWII but before interstates and the Boeing 707, the classy way to travel west was via the California Zephyr, a first-class passenger train that ran from Chicago to Oakland via Omaha and Denver. It was a combined effort of three railroads, Burlington, Denver & Rio Grande, and Western Pacific. Note the abundance of dome cars, or "vista liners". The train went away with the formation of Amtrak in 1971, but the name lingered on and today the train runs under the auspices of Amtrak, and is still one of the most popular long distance trains in America, it's views of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and California among the most spectacular. In this view, the train has just arrived in Oakland after it's cross country journey, the photographer one of the passengers.
